There are several either free or open source options that would give you voice over IP capabilities. Look into Mumble, Ventrilo, or TeamSpeak to start out with. It is even possible to use the chat program Discord but I don’t know if I trust the admins of that service. With Mumble, Ventrilo, or TeamSpeak you can do point to point conversations without a middleman, because you run the server yourself.
